SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting - “PGC Initiatives for Recovering PA’s Birds”
DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – North Museum of Nature and Science\, 400 College Ave\, Lancaster\, PA 17603 \nPresented by Stefan Karkuff\, Pennsylvania Game Commission \nMany of our bird species are in decline\, and the innumerable threats these birds face can make recovery seem insurmountable.  But the PGC is working on several statewide initiatives to help reverse these trends for some species.  We will discuss many of our ongoing recovery projects in detail\, from our kestrel and barn owl efforts to habitat management for grassland species.  We will preview some of our upcoming projects that are just taking flight\, including recovery of aerial insectivores\, GPS tracking state-endangered species\, and nightjar surveys.  \nStefan grew up in Cumberland County\, where he caught the birding bug as a young teenager.  Following his passion for birds and the outdoors he went to Ithaca College for undergrad\, and then to SUNY ESF in Syracuse for a Masters in Conservation Biology.  After grad school\, Stefan returned to central Pennsylvania as a Pheasants Forever biologist working with local farmers to create wildlife habitat on private lands\, mainly converting cropland to grassland habitat.  In 2022 he took a position with the Game Commission as the avian recovery biologist working on statewide initiatives to recover Pennsylvania’s declining bird species.  He enjoys birding\, hiking\, gardening\, and spending time with family.

How are community scientists and disparate bird observatories and research institutions leveraging these new resources? Find out on November 14th! \nDavid La Puma has been delivering exciting and engaging presentations to audiences far and wide for over two decades. His passion of bird migration\, and the emergent technology used to study it cannot be overemphasized; and if you’ve seen him talk you know how infectious this passion can be. In 2019 David began a new career with Cellular Tracking Technologies\, a high-tech company pushing the boundaries of what is possible in wildlife tracking. As the Vice President of Global Market Development\, David is responsible for helping bird observatories and other entities around the globe design and implement cutting-edge wildlife tracking infrastructure and deploy the next generation of tracking technology. For the five years prior David was the director of New Jersey Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory (http://birdcapemay.org) where his responsibilities included monitoring migration at one of the world’s most important migration concentration points\, with long-term research of raptor\, waterbird\, songbirds\, and butterfly migration engrained in the DNA of the observatory. Prior to his position with CMBO\, David was a product specialist for Leica Sport Optics where he developed the Leica Birding Team and continues to be a Leica Pro Staff member today. For over two decades David has conducted research on subjects ranging from endangered species management of the Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow and fire ecology of the Florida Everglades to the use of radar to quantify stopover habitat for migratory birds and the use of long-term datasets to detect meaningful change in wildlife populations.

SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting - “Piping Plovers at Presque Isle... A Love Story!”
DESCRIPTION:After a 60-year absence\, Piping Plovers are now once again calling Gull Point at Presque Isle State Park their summer home. Nesting there since 2017\, they have contributed to the endangered Great Lakes population in a meaningful way and afforded us with the opportunity to learn more about these charismatic shorebirds. They have also provided moments of deep sadness as well as sublime joy. Birdsong will provide an overview of the Great Lakes population and touch on highlights from the last seven years of monitoring. \nMary Birdsong is co-founder and Lead Shorebird Monitor for Erie Bird Observatory. She has been monitoring shorebirds\, particularly Piping Plovers since 2013. She is also a freelance writer and artist. She shares her home with her husband Mike Plyler and two gray tabby cats\, and is the proud Busia to three granddaughters and one grandson.

SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting - “Ears in the Sky: Using Drones to Study Songbirds”
DESCRIPTION:Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS)\, or drones\, have now been widely used in ecology and environmental monitoring for several years. Andy’s research program with undergraduate students at Gettysburg College aims to develop methods for monitoring bird sounds by UAS. His research shows that UASs can be a highly efficient way of counting songbirds and other vocal species\, and they can be quickly deployed to difficult to access places. \nAndy has been a birder since age nine\, encouraged by his parents and an elementary school teacher in his hometown of Sheffield England. After working with the British Trust for Ornithology for 10 years\, Andy came to the US to attend graduate school at Penn State\, where he earned a PhD in Ecology. He was data analyst and lead editor of the 2nd Atlas of Breeding Birds in Pennsylvania\, chairs the steering Committee for the 3rd PA Bird Atlas\, and currently serves on the Maryland/DC Bird Records Committee. He is chair of the Environmental Studies department at Gettysburg College and lives in Frederick\, Maryland\, with his wife and 11-year-old twins.

DESCRIPTION:Raven Ridge Wildlife Center will present a one-hour program on birds of prey with our newest team member\, Mark Kocher. Mark will present an up-close look at the beauty of these creatures\, like Teddy the Barred Owl. Learn how these animals survive\, hunting skills\, aptitudes and what it is like to work with them and share with you some interesting facts you might not have known. Raven Ridge is a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation center in Washington Boro\, PA specializing in healing injured birds of prey\, mammals\, and waterfowl in the Lancaster County area. Raven Ridge Founder and Director Tracie Young will also join us. \nMark Kocher has been involved in raptor rehabilitation efforts for over 30 years. First as a long-term volunteer helping rehabber Mitz Eaton in York County and now recently for Raven Ridge. He is also a long-term volunteer with the York County Parks mostly at the Nixon Park Nature Center and is a active member of the York County Astronomical Society. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a entomology degree. He resides in southern York County. \nTracie Young founded Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in 2015 and serves as director and rehabilitator. She holds permits from the PA Game Commission\, PA Fish and Boat Commission\, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that allows RRWC to provide wildlife rehabilitation services and wildlife education programs. \nMeeting will be held inside the air-conditioned barn at Climbers Run Nature Center! \nA reminder our meetings are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting – "An Update from Lancaster Conservancy" + Feeder Cam 101 + Summer Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Lancaster County Bird Club’s July meeting shifts to the Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Center. \nWe will start out with a no-cost summer picnic provided for meeting attendees with food being served starting at 6:30 p.m. The club will offer grilled hot dogs\, condiments\, chips\, a selection of drinks and a sweet prior to the meeting. \nStarting around 7 p.m. after individuals have finished eating\, we will head just down the hill to the location of the Conservancy’s popular Feeder Cam and learn firsthand about this offering and how it is maintained. We will then head to the Nature Center for a short formal program that will update meeting attendees on current conservancy happenings and items of interest related to their array of preserves. We will end the meeting earlier than normal to allow attendees to soak up the last bits of daylight and explore the Conservancy property and do some birding and continue to socialize with fellow meeting attendees. \nA reminder our meetings are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Join David Brown for a discussion of this niche form of birding. We will look back one hundred years to hawk watching’s origins in Pennsylvania up through the present day. David will discuss how to get involved\, what equipment is needed\, and the basics of raptor identification. Beyond mere data collection exists a deeper human element that explains why David and others choose to make this activity their life passion. \nDavid Brown is a professional hawk watch counter from Lycoming County\, Pennsylvania. He has 14 seasons of experience as the official counter at hawk watches in Delaware\, New Jersey\, and New York. He is a co-founder of LycoBirds\, a website and YouTube channel that provides educational content for birders. David is especially known for his video series on raptor identification and his daily video summaries from the Braddock Bay Hawk Watch.

DESCRIPTION:Lancaster County Bird Club will setup a table at the Southeast Nature Fest showcasing the club’s activities\, bird conservation and the hobby of birding from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Hazel Jackson Middle School. A bird walk to introduce individuals to the hobby of birding will also be held prior to the event from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. along the Conestoga Greenway Trail. The walk will leave promptly at 8 a.m. from the Conestoga Greenway Trail’s South Broad Street Parking Lot located a short walk from school grounds at 407 S Broad St\, Lancaster\, Pa. Bring binoculars if you have them! A limited number of basic loaner binoculars will also be available. The walk will be cancelled in the event of rain.

SUMMARY:World Migratory Bird Day Bird Walks & Outreach
DESCRIPTION:The Pennsylvania Game Commission and DCNR are partnering up to create a new event at Middle Creek celebrating World Migratory Bird Day. The event could become part of the WMA’s annual schedule if successful. A large number of exhibitors will be on site and many demonstrations — to include bird banding demonstrations — will be held. LCBC will have a table setup at the event which runs from 10AM-2PM. Our table will be setup inside the Visitor Center at the windows overlooking the feeder/garden area. We will also lead 45-minute introductory bird walks at 11AM and 1PM. Bring your binoculars to take part in the walks! SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting – "Current Conservation Concerns of American Goshawk in Pennsylvania"
DESCRIPTION:American goshawk was recently recognized and formally listed in Pennsylvania as Endangered. We will briefly cover the history of the goshawk population in Pennsylvania and suggested reasons for its decline. We will describe current monitoring efforts\, successes\, challenges\, and failures. Including the Game Commission’s efforts to test suspected causes contributing to the decline. The critical first step in planning a recovery. \nPatti Barber has studied birds on four continents\, she did her master’s research on mate guarding and paternity in red-faced warblers. She is currently the endangered bird specialist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission where she is responsible for the 20 Threatened and Endangered native birds of the state.

SUMMARY:Octoraro Reservoir Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Larry Bernhardt will lead a field trip to the Octoraro Reservoir area. Meet at the boat launch area parking lot off Spruce Grove Road by 7 a.m. We will scope the reservoir from the shoreline area\, so bring along a scope if you have one. We will take a short drive to Blue Gill Road to view the wetland area and over to Liberty Road to look for warblers and other migrant species. We will then drive two miles over to Mt. Eden Road to view the large wetland area which produces several rarities each year. There will be a 1.5-mile hike from there for anyone who wants to continue. SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting – "Chasing Broad-winged Hawks from Canada to Colombia: Ecology of a Long-Distance Migrant”
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Laurie Goodrich from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary as we explore new discoveries made about Broad-winged Hawks\, a secretive forest raptor. In 2014 migration monitoring data showed some populations of Broad-winged Hawks are declining in eastern North America. Hawk Mountain launched a new study to understand the full-life cycle ecology and migration of Broad-winged Hawks. Scientists have tracked Broad-wings from Pennsylvania\, Connecticut\, New Hampshire\, and Canada to better understand migration patterns\, threats and survival and studied their nesting ecology in three states. \nDr. Laurie Goodrich serves as the Sarkis Acopian Director of Conservation Science at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Goodrich has worked in virtually every aspect of conservation at Hawk Mountain\, from overseeing its long-term migration counts\, to directing its education program and developing the first education plan\, to conducting scientific research and publishing more than 50 peer-reviewed papers. She is considered exceptional in her ability to bring people together to foster successful long-term conservation. Locally\, she launched the collaborative Pennsylvania Farmland Raptor and The Broad-winged Hawk research projects\, and globally\, she co-founded the now world-famous\, million-raptor conservation site at the River of Raptors in Veracruz\, Mexico. Working with colleagues at the Hawk Migration Association of North America\, HawkWatch International\, and Bird Studies Canada\, she helped develop the award-winning Raptor Population Index Project\, and contributed heavily to The State of North America’s Birds of Prey\, the first comprehensive analysis of raptor populations across the continent. Combined\, she has coordinated the work of dozens of volunteers\, trainees\, and graduate students\, and interacted with countless citizen scientists.

DESCRIPTION:Contact: Jonathan (717-940-6067 or jonathan.heller@comcast.net) \nJonathan Heller will lead a field trip to Memorial Lake and surrounding area in Lebanon County for early morning displaying American Woodcock at 7 a.m. Meet at the Middle Road Parking lot. From Rt. 322 east of Hershey and south of Lebanon\, travel north on Rt. 934 through Annville. After going under Rt. 81 and past the National Cemetery\, turn left onto Asher Miner Road. Funck’s Restaurant/gas station is on the right. In approximately .3 miles turn left onto Boundary Road. Do not turn left onto Memorial Lake Road\, which is one-way around the west side of the lake. In about .5 miles turn left onto Middle Road\, which leads to the parking lot and bathroom facilities. Target birds will be water birds on the lake and early migrants\, possibly including American Bittern. There will be some walking on trails that have been very muddy over the last year so hiking boots are recommended. SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting - Migration patterns and overwintering locations of Veeries in South America
DESCRIPTION:Veeries are songbirds that breed in dense\, moist forests of eastern North America and are easily recognized by their distinctive song.  Using the latest tracking technology\, we followed the migration of Veeries from their breeding grounds to their overwintering sites in South America.  This lecture will discuss patterns of Veery migration and describe the overwintering locations and habitats of Veeries in South America.  \nTodd Underwood earned a PhD in Zoology from the University of Manitoba in Canada and is Professor of Biology at Kutztown University. Here he teaches courses\, including Ornithology and Animal Behavior\, and studies the behavior and ecology of birds. For the past 25 years\, his research has focused on host defenses against avian brood parasitism. Recently\, he has begun a long-term study of the ecology of Veeries breeding at French Creek State Park.  \nChristopher M. Heckscher from Delaware State University served as a coauthor on this presentation.

SUMMARY:Field Trip to Middle Creek WMA 
DESCRIPTION:Contact: Craig Boyhont (717-368-5986 or cboyhont@gmail.com) \nCraig Boyhont will lead this late winter field trip to Middle Creek WMA. Meet at 8 a.m. at Stop No. 1 along Kleinfeltersville Road between the museum pond and the main lake. Waterfowl will be the target species on this trip and there should be plenty to see. We will bird into the early afternoon so bring along any snacks/food/drinks and dress for the weather. The group will view the lake from different areas and look at various ponds and wet areas with the possibility of finding 12-20 species here on a single day to go along with the many thousands of Snow Geese staging at this time of year. It is a great time to be at Middle Creek. Some of the target birds include Bald Eagles\, Northern Harriers\, Ross’s Goose\, Greater White-fronted Goose and hopefully some early spring migrants or an early morning American Woodcock. Meet at 10 a.m. at the park’s main parking lot near the pavilion and boat launch off Vinegar Ferry Road. Dress warmly to scan the river for mergansers and winter waterfowl. DESCRIPTION:Note new meeting location at the North Museum!\nPennsylvania’s Bird Atlas (PBA3) is a statewide inventory of birds breeding and overwintering in the state. \nThe PBA3 will refine our knowledge of the current distribution\, relative abundance\, and timing of breeding for all the breeding birds of PA – information that is critical for prioritizing conservation needs. Learn how you can contribute to the PBA3 in this talk presented by Amber Wiewel\, the Third Pennsylvania Bird Atlas Coordinator. \nAmber grew up in Missouri where she first fell in love with birds in the Ozarks. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and a master’s degree from Iowa State University\, and then went on to work as a research wildlife biologist with USGS’s Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative and Pennsylvania State University before joining the Pennsylvania Bird Atlas team as Atlas Coordinator.
