DESCRIPTION:Emily Broich (717-333-9146 or emilybroich@gmail.com) will lead a field trip to Riverfront Park (north of Marietta). Meet at 10 a.m. at the park’s main parking lot near the pavilion and boat launch off Vinegar Ferry Road. Dress warmly to scan the river for mergansers and winter waterfowl. We will walk a short distance to look for other winter visitors among the trees including Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets\, Brown Creeper and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Please register by 6 p.m. on Thursday\, Jan. 15 if you would like to attend. Registration allows us to relay cancellation information should there be a need to cancel due to winter weather.

SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting - Cerulean Warbler Habitat in the Kittatinny Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – North Museum of Nature and Science\, 400 College Ave\, Lancaster\, PA 17603 \nPresented by Jennifer Sliko\, Audubon Mid-Atlantic \nCerulean Warblers\, once widespread in the eastern U.S.\, have declined by about 70% since 1966 due to habitat loss and degradation. The Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Landscape (KRCL) provides critical breeding habitat\, and targeted forest management—such as shelterwood harvests\, canopy gap creation\, and crop tree release—has been implemented to restore the structural diversity these birds need. As a designated climate refugia\, the ridge also helps buffer biodiversity from the impacts of climate change\, supporting long-term resilience for forest-dwelling species.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Jennifer Sliko is a geoscientist and conservation professional with over 17 years of experience spanning environmental research\, education\, and policy. She began her career with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection before earning her Ph.D. in Geosciences from the University of South Florida\, where she studied past climate change using stable isotopes in fossil corals. She later served on the faculty at Virginia Tech and then at Penn State Harrisburg\, conducting research on nutrient reduction in stream restoration projects. In 2024\, she joined Audubon Mid-Atlantic’s Healthy Forest Program and acts as the External Lead for the Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Landscape\, where she works with municipalities and partners to advance conservation planning\, habitat restoration\, and collaborative resource management across the region.

DESCRIPTION:12/26/25 UPDATE: The Winter Bird Walk scheduled for 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area is being cancelled out of an abundance of caution. With icy conditions expected overnight and freezing temperatures predicted to persist into late morning\, we don’t want to compromise participant safety with a hike on untreated surfaces. \nJoin Lancaster County Bird Club for a field-based complement to our Dec. 10 lecture on the Christmas Bird Count. This field trip offers a hands-on birding experience that will allow participants to explore Middle Creek’s winter landscape and observe the season’s local bird species while gaining insight into the process of counting birds for the CBC. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or new to birding and CBCs\, this outing offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and learn how birding data is collected in the field each year for this citizen-science survey. DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – North Museum of Nature and Science\, 400 College Ave\, Lancaster\, PA 17603 \nPresented by Dr. Jeff Larkin and his graduate students Colin Lynch and Nick Logan \nDr. Jeff Larkin\, biology professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and American Bird Conservancy Forest Bird Advisor\, will introduce two of his graduate students who will report on their master’s level research on ovenbirds and whip-poor-wills. The research findings they will share are part of a long-term ongoing effort to better understand the factors that affect the occupancy and abundance of at-risk species and diverse eastern forest bird communities in general. Colin Lynch is studying the effects of forest structure on ovenbird abundance using LiDAR data. Nick Logan is using autonomous recording units and a machine learned classifier to studying the relationship between whip-poor-will abundance and time since prescribed fire.

This year marks the 126th CBC\, and the Lititz Christmas Bird Count—covering Middle Creek and the surrounding area—is one of the oldest in the nation\, dating back to 1905\, even before Middle Creek existed. Discover how this cherished event brings bird enthusiasts together to celebrate conservation and community. Learn about the CBC’s origins\, its influence on birding in Lancaster County and beyond\, and how bird occurrences in this area have evolved dramatically since the first count was conducted. A public affairs professional with nearly 20 years of federal government experience\, he currently works as a civilian at Naval Supply Systems Command in Mechanicsburg and recently retired from the military after 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and Pennsylvania Air National Guard. DESCRIPTION:Carl Groff will lead this easy walking field trip west along the trail with a stop at the Hershey Trust Wetlands overlook\, and then continue west with views of open fields\, woodland\, and creeks. DESCRIPTION:Bruce Carl will conduct a “Big Sit” at Middle Creek WMA up the hill on the Conservation Trail overlooking the Visitor Center on Oct. 11 (rain date Oct. 12). He will start before dawn and go into the evening.  The public may stop by at any time to assist him with identifying species seen and heard from his 17-foot circle or just stop by to visit.  The Big Sit is an annual\, international\, noncompetitive birding event founded by the New Haven (Connecticut) Bird Club. The LCBC is using this event as a fundraiser to supplement our annual donations to Middle Creek WMA and the LCBC youth scholarship program.  Folks may sponsor Bruce by pledging an amount for each species identified or by contributing a flat amount to the event.  You are also invited to enlist other individuals to sponsor him or to donate.  Donations and pledges are to be paid by personal check\, payable to the LCBC.  Send donations/pledges to LCBC\, PO Box 262\, Willow Street\, PA 17584-0262 and note “Big Sit” in the memo of the check. Ten years later\, significant progress has been made toward reestablishing quail through translocation efforts. This presentation will discuss the species’ decline\, the status of the restoration project\, and highlight how\, in collaboration with our dedicated partners\, we are working to restore wild quail to the commonwealth. \nHaley Keff recently completed her master’s at Texas Tech University\, where her research focused on bobwhite management including translocation\, habitat selection\, and chick survival. She is now the Quail\, Pheasant\, and Dove Biologist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission leading the state’s bobwhite quail reintroduction program.

SUMMARY:Pumping Station Road Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Carl Groff will lead a field trip to Pumping Station Road outside Brickerville. Meet at 8 a.m. at the gravel parking lot at the intersection of Route 322 and Pumping Station Road. Located in the Furnace Hills in northern Lancaster County\, Pumping Station Road works its way along the Hammer Creek through SGL 156. Pumping Station Road is one of the more popular spots for warblers and fall migrants in Lancaster County. This section will take you along a gravel/stone road through mixed wooded areas along the creek and in one section you will go through a clearcut area for power lines. A wide variety of birds are possible with special attention made to the warblers that use this area as a brief stop-over during migration. Some other target birds will include thrushes\, flycatchers\, tanagers\, orioles\, sparrows\, grosbeaks\, and hopefully a surprise or two along the way. There are no restroom facilities or porta-johns at this location. Closest restroom facilities would be in Brickerville at one of the gas stations at the main intersection with Rt. 501. Cell phone reception is also poor at this location. Regular hiking shoes/boots will be fine for this trip as much of the walking will be on mostly level gravel/grass covered roads. Total walking distance is about 2 miles. She’s worked as a Naturalist\, a Conservation Educator at an AZA-accredited zoo\, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary\, and a Bird Banding and Education Specialist at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. She continued to broaden her studies with the Ornithology Lab at Villanova University\, as well as studying tropical ecology throughout Latin America.\nShe is now Hawaii’s premier nature and bird guide with her very own birding tour company\, Hawaii Bird Tours.\n

Tools and resources available to engage homeowners from Backyard Habitat Programs to Community Science Programs will be shared as well as impactful municipal and community projects including creating Native Plant Pop-up Gardens to Native Plant Garden Tours to Demonstration Gardens and more. \nHeidi Shiver was member of Bucks Audubon’s Board and also served as Board President\, helping to create their advocacy committee\, establishing renewable energy as a focus and created and led their book club for 6 years. Currently\, she serves on Doylestown Township’s Environmental Advisory Council (over 6 years) and coordinates their Bird Town Program and starting in 2025 will be the Environmental Advocacy Council Chair. She continues as a Bucks County Penn State Master Gardener for over 17 years. Heidi also serves on the Executive Committee of the Pennsylvania Audubon Council. She is also helping with managing\, writing and editing for the 2nd edition of Birds of Bucks County\, to be published shortly. For the past 3 years\, Heidi has served as the President of Bird Town Pennsylvania\, working intensely with their Board to reinvigorate\, to strengthen and to grow the program across the state and promote community-based conservation actions to create a healthier and sustainable environment for birds\, wildlife and people. \n

He has been studying the effects of rapid environmental change on birds across the world and in Lancaster. Dan serves the ornithological community as the Board Chair of AvinetResearch Supplies and a Past President of the Association of Field Ornithologists. He is also active in local conservation efforts as a member of the Board of Directors of Lancaster Conservancy and PA Master Naturalist. \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting - “PGC Initiatives for Recovering PA’s Birds”
DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – North Museum of Nature and Science\, 400 College Ave\, Lancaster\, PA 17603 \nPresented by Stefan Karkuff\, Pennsylvania Game Commission \nMany of our bird species are in decline\, and the innumerable threats these birds face can make recovery seem insurmountable.  But the PGC is working on several statewide initiatives to help reverse these trends for some species.  We will discuss many of our ongoing recovery projects in detail\, from our kestrel and barn owl efforts to habitat management for grassland species.  We will preview some of our upcoming projects that are just taking flight\, including recovery of aerial insectivores\, GPS tracking state-endangered species\, and nightjar surveys.  \nStefan grew up in Cumberland County\, where he caught the birding bug as a young teenager.  Following his passion for birds and the outdoors he went to Ithaca College for undergrad\, and then to SUNY ESF in Syracuse for a Masters in Conservation Biology.  After grad school\, Stefan returned to central Pennsylvania as a Pheasants Forever biologist working with local farmers to create wildlife habitat on private lands\, mainly converting cropland to grassland habitat.  In 2022 he took a position with the Game Commission as the avian recovery biologist working on statewide initiatives to recover Pennsylvania’s declining bird species.  He enjoys birding\, hiking\, gardening\, and spending time with family.

How are community scientists and disparate bird observatories and research institutions leveraging these new resources? Find out on November 14th! \nDavid La Puma has been delivering exciting and engaging presentations to audiences far and wide for over two decades. His passion of bird migration\, and the emergent technology used to study it cannot be overemphasized; and if you’ve seen him talk you know how infectious this passion can be. In 2019 David began a new career with Cellular Tracking Technologies\, a high-tech company pushing the boundaries of what is possible in wildlife tracking. As the Vice President of Global Market Development\, David is responsible for helping bird observatories and other entities around the globe design and implement cutting-edge wildlife tracking infrastructure and deploy the next generation of tracking technology. For the five years prior David was the director of New Jersey Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory (http://birdcapemay.org) where his responsibilities included monitoring migration at one of the world’s most important migration concentration points\, with long-term research of raptor\, waterbird\, songbirds\, and butterfly migration engrained in the DNA of the observatory. Prior to his position with CMBO\, David was a product specialist for Leica Sport Optics where he developed the Leica Birding Team and continues to be a Leica Pro Staff member today. For over two decades David has conducted research on subjects ranging from endangered species management of the Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow and fire ecology of the Florida Everglades to the use of radar to quantify stopover habitat for migratory birds and the use of long-term datasets to detect meaningful change in wildlife populations.

DESCRIPTION:After a 60-year absence\, Piping Plovers are now once again calling Gull Point at Presque Isle State Park their summer home. Nesting there since 2017\, they have contributed to the endangered Great Lakes population in a meaningful way and afforded us with the opportunity to learn more about these charismatic shorebirds. They have also provided moments of deep sadness as well as sublime joy. Birdsong will provide an overview of the Great Lakes population and touch on highlights from the last seven years of monitoring. \nMary Birdsong is co-founder and Lead Shorebird Monitor for Erie Bird Observatory. She has been monitoring shorebirds\, particularly Piping Plovers since 2013. She is also a freelance writer and artist. She shares her home with her husband Mike Plyler and two gray tabby cats\, and is the proud Busia to three granddaughters and one grandson.

DESCRIPTION:Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS)\, or drones\, have now been widely used in ecology and environmental monitoring for several years. Andy’s research program with undergraduate students at Gettysburg College aims to develop methods for monitoring bird sounds by UAS. His research shows that UASs can be a highly efficient way of counting songbirds and other vocal species\, and they can be quickly deployed to difficult to access places. \nAndy has been a birder since age nine\, encouraged by his parents and an elementary school teacher in his hometown of Sheffield England. After working with the British Trust for Ornithology for 10 years\, Andy came to the US to attend graduate school at Penn State\, where he earned a PhD in Ecology. He was data analyst and lead editor of the 2nd Atlas of Breeding Birds in Pennsylvania\, chairs the steering Committee for the 3rd PA Bird Atlas\, and currently serves on the Maryland/DC Bird Records Committee. He is chair of the Environmental Studies department at Gettysburg College and lives in Frederick\, Maryland\, with his wife and 11-year-old twins.

DESCRIPTION:Raven Ridge Wildlife Center will present a one-hour program on birds of prey with our newest team member\, Mark Kocher. Mark will present an up-close look at the beauty of these creatures\, like Teddy the Barred Owl. Learn how these animals survive\, hunting skills\, aptitudes and what it is like to work with them and share with you some interesting facts you might not have known. Raven Ridge is a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation center in Washington Boro\, PA specializing in healing injured birds of prey\, mammals\, and waterfowl in the Lancaster County area. Raven Ridge Founder and Director Tracie Young will also join us. \nMark Kocher has been involved in raptor rehabilitation efforts for over 30 years. First as a long-term volunteer helping rehabber Mitz Eaton in York County and now recently for Raven Ridge. He is also a long-term volunteer with the York County Parks mostly at the Nixon Park Nature Center and is a active member of the York County Astronomical Society. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a entomology degree. He resides in southern York County. \nTracie Young founded Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in 2015 and serves as director and rehabilitator. She holds permits from the PA Game Commission\, PA Fish and Boat Commission\, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that allows RRWC to provide wildlife rehabilitation services and wildlife education programs. \nMeeting will be held inside the air-conditioned barn at Climbers Run Nature Center! \nA reminder our meetings are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting – "An Update from Lancaster Conservancy" + Feeder Cam 101 + Summer Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Lancaster County Bird Club’s July meeting shifts to the Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Center. \nWe will start out with a no-cost summer picnic provided for meeting attendees with food being served starting at 6:30 p.m. The club will offer grilled hot dogs\, condiments\, chips\, a selection of drinks and a sweet prior to the meeting. \nStarting around 7 p.m. after individuals have finished eating\, we will head just down the hill to the location of the Conservancy’s popular Feeder Cam and learn firsthand about this offering and how it is maintained. We will then head to the Nature Center for a short formal program that will update meeting attendees on current conservancy happenings and items of interest related to their array of preserves. We will end the meeting earlier than normal to allow attendees to soak up the last bits of daylight and explore the Conservancy property and do some birding and continue to socialize with fellow meeting attendees. \nA reminder our meetings are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
