SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting – “How Citizen Science Can Help Pennsylvania's Purple Martins”
DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center\, 100 Museum Road\, Stevens\, PA 17578 \nPresented by: Will Krohn\, Master’s in Wildlife Ecology Student\, Aeroecology Lab at the University of Delawre \nNorth America’s largest swallow\, the Purple Martin\, is in decline. This talk will discuss the life history of the Purple Martin and some reasons for this population decline. Then\, Will Krohn will discuss his research to help conserve Purple Martins by studying how young martins move between the artificial colonies that they rely on for nesting. This research is currently happening across Pennsylvania\, and this talk will conclude with ways that you can contribute to this project and help protect Purple Martins. \nWill Krohn has worked as an avian field technician and bird bander all around the eastern United States. He’s worked with a variety of species\, from Common Loons to Yellow-breasted Chats. Now\, Will is conducting research on Purple Martins while pursuing his Master’s in Wildlife Ecology in the Aeroecology Lab at the University of Delaware.

DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center\, 100 Museum Road\, Stevens\, PA 17578 \nPresented by: Patti Barber\, Pennsylvania Game Commission  \nOsprey are an incredible success story\, but often overshowed by the recovery of bald eagles and peregrine falcons. We will cover the history of the osprey population in Pennsylvania and reasons for its decline then recovery. We will describe current monitoring efforts\, successes\, challenges\, and failures. Including the current population and distribution in the state. \nPatti Barber has studied birds on four continents\, she did her master’s research on mate guarding and paternity in red-faced warblers. She is currently the endangered bird specialist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission where she is responsible for the 20 Threatened and Endangered native birds of the state.

SUMMARY:Chestnut Grove Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Larry Bernhardt will lead a field trip to Chestnut Grove Natural Area (CGNA). Meet at the preserve’s main parking lot (directions below) at 7 a.m. CGNA is an ideal place to view wildlife and observe nature due to habitat diversity\, which includes stream corridors\, wetlands\, open water\, grasslands\, and forested uplands\, as well as its location along the Susquehanna River migratory corridor. Target species for this trip are early migrating raptors and shorebirds\, songbirds\, and grassland birds. CGNA is located south of Washington Boro. Follow River Road for 2.1 miles past the Turkey Hill processing plant to the point where River Road makes a sharp turn to the right. Stay on River Road for .7 miles to where Chestnut Grove Road goes straight ahead\, and River Road makes a sharp turn to the left. Stay on Chestnut Grove Road for .2 miles. CGNA parking lot is on the right. Be prepared to walk mostly in the sun on trails and service roads. Snacks\, water\, sunscreen\, and insect repellent are recommended. A Porta-John is located at the parking lot. SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting - “Sparrows Simplified: Making Sense of LBJ’s”
DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – North Museum of Nature and Science\, 400 College Ave\, Lancaster\, PA 17603 \nPresented by Michael Moore\, retired Biology professor and past president of the Delaware Ornithological Society  \nMany birders struggle with identifying sparrows\, referring to them as LBJ’s (little brown jobs) or sparrow sp. This talk will help you tackle this difficult group. It will discuss and then attempt to blend the two main approaches to identification\, the Peterson System and the Cape May School\, to lead you to sparrow identification confidence. Each of the 16 species of regularly occurring sparrows in this area will be compared and contrasted with some discussion of finding and identifying rarities. \nMike is a retired Biology Professor and a past president of the Delaware Ornithological Society. He started birding in middle school in Massachusetts and has had a life longpassion for birds. He completed his PhD at the University of Washington on the field endocrinology of White-crowned Sparrows. After doing a postdoc at the University of Texas in Austin\, he served on the Biology Faculty at Arizona State University for 27 years.  He moved to the University of Delaware in in 2009 where he retired after 11 years. He has been funded throughout his career by the National Science Foundation and the Nation Institutes of Health and has published nearly 100 papers in scientific journals. He also has a passion for dragonflies and serves as a Vice President for the Dragonfly Society of the Americas.

DESCRIPTION:Carl Groff will lead the count at a hawk watch that will take place in the Ironville Community Park parking lot off Prospect Road starting at 9:30 a.m. The viewing area is level and comfortable. Bring chairs and a lunch. The site has public restrooms and a pavilion. Target species will include Broad-winged Hawk\, American Kestrel\, Osprey\, Bald Eagle and Sharp-shinned Hawk. The watch will continue until the flight ends. Feel free to come and go as you wish.  Binoculars are needed and a spotting scope is helpful.
