SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting – “Monitoring American Oystercatchers on the Delaware Bay"
DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center\, 100 Museum Road\, Stevens\, PA 17578 \nPresented by: Emmy Casper\, Wildlife Biologist\, Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey \nBreeding populations of American oystercatchers have been heavily monitored on New Jersey’s ocean beaches since 2003\, but little is known about the oystercatchers nesting along the state’s Delaware Bay beaches…until now. Learn how biologists from Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ\, The Wetlands Institute\, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are working together on a new project to unravel the mysteries of this previously understudied population. Wildlife Biologist Emmy Casper will share stories from the field and discuss how on-the-ground monitoring\, trail cameras\, and bird banding are all being used to learn more about the oystercatchers that call the Delaware Bayshore home. \nBreeding populations of American oystercatchers have been heavily monitored on New Jersey’s ocean beaches since 2003\, but little is known about the oystercatchers nesting along the state’s Delaware Bay beaches…until now. SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting - The Past\, Present and Future of our Relationship with Pigeons
DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center\, 100 Museum Road\, Stevens\, PA 17578 \nPresented by: Aspen Simone and Hannah Michelle Brower\, Founders of Philly Pigeon Tours \nWhen people think about pigeons\, it’s mostly negative — rats with wings\, dirty pests\, trash animals. For doves\, it’s the opposite — they’re symbols of love\, peace\, safety\, and even spirituality. But the words “pigeon” (French) and “dove” (Old English / Germanic) are just different terms for the same family of bird — Columbidae. So… what’s going on here? In this talk\, Aspen and Hannah Michelle (“HM”) will cover ten thousand years of pigeon history\, starting with their domestication\, covering thousands of years of a mutually beneficial relationship and positive feelings\, up through the 1960s when the relationship turned sour. They will talk about how the future might look different\, and why we think empathy for pigeons is surprisingly crucial during this moment in history.\n\n\nSpeaker Bios: Aspen Simone (they/them) is a co-founder of Philly Pigeon Tours. They have a decade-plus career in civic technology\, working for agencies and companies focused on regional planning\, zoning\, and sustainability\, as well as on federal benefits and environmental cleanup programs. They hold a Bachelor’s in Geography from Dartmouth\, spanning natural and urban geography\, as well as a Master’s in Conflict Resolution from UMass Boston. \n\nHannah Michelle Brower (she/her) is a co-founder of Philly Pigeon Tours. A lifelong birder\, HM got her start in nature education during high school at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans\, and holds a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She also teaches about bugs with Insectopia\, and is presently working towards a professional certificate in restorative justice with Suffolk University.

DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – North Museum of Nature and Science\, 400 College Ave\, Lancaster\, PA 17603 \nPresented by James Cubie \nYou can make a big difference by saving 75 of birds you love to watch right in your yard.  Our club can save1\,500 birds.  How?  by protecting the birds from deadly window collisions. There will be several videos\, including a quiz challenging you to find birds in a very special habitat and a free “Consumer Guide to Bird Window Collision Prevention.” He will describe feasible strategies for preventing bird window collisions in our community and nationally.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Jim Cubie is a retired attorney who has worked for conservation in many different venues. Since the 2019 report in Science reporting that we have lost a shocking 30% of our birds\, he has dedicated himself to preventing bird window collisions and the promotion of native plants. He works closely with the nation’s leading bird window collision expert\, Dr. Daniel Klem of Muhlenberg College. He began his career with Ralph Nader\, developed an environment strategy for a presidential campaign and retired as Chief Counsel of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee. His signature accomplishment was the creation of the Wetland Reserve Program. It has restored over 3 million acres of drained agricultural wetlands. His life list of about 700 includes the famous Lancaster County Gyrfalcon. He is married to Doreen Cubie\, a widely published freelance writer specializing in wildlife conservation — and the reason he has a life list of 700 birds.

SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting - Cerulean Warbler Habitat in the Kittatinny Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Club Meeting – North Museum of Nature and Science\, 400 College Ave\, Lancaster\, PA 17603 \nPresented by Jennifer Sliko\, Audubon Mid-Atlantic \nCerulean Warblers\, once widespread in the eastern U.S.\, have declined by about 70% since 1966 due to habitat loss and degradation. The Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Landscape (KRCL) provides critical breeding habitat\, and targeted forest management—such as shelterwood harvests\, canopy gap creation\, and crop tree release—has been implemented to restore the structural diversity these birds need. As a designated climate refugia\, the ridge also helps buffer biodiversity from the impacts of climate change\, supporting long-term resilience for forest-dwelling species.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Jennifer Sliko is a geoscientist and conservation professional with over 17 years of experience spanning environmental research\, education\, and policy. She began her career with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection before earning her Ph.D. in Geosciences from the University of South Florida\, where she studied past climate change using stable isotopes in fossil corals. She later served on the faculty at Virginia Tech and then at Penn State Harrisburg\, conducting research on nutrient reduction in stream restoration projects. In 2024\, she joined Audubon Mid-Atlantic’s Healthy Forest Program and acts as the External Lead for the Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Landscape\, where she works with municipalities and partners to advance conservation planning\, habitat restoration\, and collaborative resource management across the region.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Middle Creek Winter Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:12/26/25 UPDATE: The Winter Bird Walk scheduled for 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area is being cancelled out of an abundance of caution. With icy conditions expected overnight and freezing temperatures predicted to persist into late morning\, we don’t want to compromise participant safety with a hike on untreated surfaces. \nJoin Lancaster County Bird Club for a field-based complement to our Dec. 10 lecture on the Christmas Bird Count. This field trip offers a hands-on birding experience that will allow participants to explore Middle Creek’s winter landscape and observe the season’s local bird species while gaining insight into the process of counting birds for the CBC. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or new to birding and CBCs\, this outing offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and learn how birding data is collected in the field each year for this citizen-science survey. No pre-registration is necessary for this trip. \n\nNOTE: The lecture associated with this field trip will be held on Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Middle Creek. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend both events\, but attendance at both events is not required. \nLocation: Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center\, 100 Museum Road\, Stevens\, PA 17578 \nContact: Ted Nichols\, 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com.
