Monthly Club Meeting – “How Citizen Science Can Help Pennsylvania’s Purple Martins”

Presented by: Will Krohn, Master’s in Wildlife Ecology Student, Aeroecology Lab at the University of Delawre
North America’s largest swallow, the Purple Martin, is in decline. This talk will discuss the life history of the Purple Martin and some reasons for this population decline. Then, Will Krohn will discuss his research to help conserve Purple Martins by studying how young martins move between the artificial colonies that they rely on for nesting. This research is currently happening across Pennsylvania, and this talk will conclude with ways that you can contribute to this project and help protect Purple Martins.
Will Krohn has worked as an avian field technician and bird bander all around the eastern United States. He’s worked with a variety of species, from Common Loons to Yellow-breasted Chats. Now, Will is conducting research on Purple Martins while pursuing his Master’s in Wildlife Ecology in the Aeroecology Lab at the University of Delaware.
