Monthly Club Meeting – “Ornithology Research Update: Forest Birds”

Club Meeting – North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave, Lancaster, PA 17603
Presented by Dr. Jeff Larkin and his graduate students Colin Lynch and Nick Logan
Dr. Jeff Larkin, biology professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and American Bird Conservancy Forest Bird Advisor, will introduce two of his graduate students who will report on their master’s level research on ovenbirds and whip-poor-wills. The research findings they will share are part of a long-term ongoing effort to better understand the factors that affect the occupancy and abundance of at-risk species and diverse eastern forest bird communities in general. Colin Lynch is studying the effects of forest structure on ovenbird abundance using LiDAR data. Nick Logan is using autonomous recording units and a machine learned classifier to studying the relationship between whip-poor-will abundance and time since prescribed fire.
